Back with another monthly feature of "From the Collection"!
Was he wrong? Dr. Michael Hefferon authored this 1953 book, Of Plagues and Vampires, to shed light on some of the wacky and weird treatments, cases and unfoldings of the medical community through the years. For more information on Quackery medicine, click the link in our bio! # MuseumOfHealthCare
Made of titanium, steel, or ceramic, artificial hips are incredibly strong for their size. They are surgically implanted to replace the head of the femur, and work with polyethylene (plastic) to create a moveable joint. Orthopaedic surgeons have been performing these types of procedures for over a century! Head to the link in our bio for more on Orthopaedics and Prosthetics!
Aptly titled The Reluctant Surgeon, this 1960 biography by author John Kobler outlines the trials and tribulations of John Hunter, who is credited in part with the discovery of the smallpox vaccine. However, it seems he was not a fan of teaching. Check out the smallpox vaccine vials at the link in our bio! #MuseumOfHealthCare
Shortly before the discovery of the electron in 1897, Sir William Crookes developed the cathode ray tube. The unknown 'rays' traveled from cathode to anode, turning the central paddle wheel and proving whatever it was, it had mass! The 1900's model pictured here is from Dr. R. C. Wheeler. Check the link in our bio to see the X-ray tube, another of Crookes' creations!
Now Accepting Applications! Have an interest in health care history and an idea for a great story to tell? Than the Margaret Angus Research Fellowship may be the perfect opportunity for you! (See the link in bio or visit our website for more details!)
